Paul Poston

Home / Composers / Paul Poston

Paul Poston (b. 1986) began studying music at the age of nine, primarily focusing on piano performance. He first pursued music composition in 2008 during his second year of undergraduate studies at the University of Texas in Arlington where he was awarded the Lloyd Taliaferro Memorial Scholarship for Composition the following year. He graduated with a BM in Music Composition/Theory from the University of Texas at Arlington under the direction of Dr. George Chave.
In 2009, Mr. Poston accepted a teaching assistantship at Florida International University to study with composer Orlando Jacinto Garcia. During his tenure, he actively participated in the New Music Ensemble as well as the FIU Laptop & Electronic Arts Ensemble (FLEA) performing in venues across Miami, including multiple performances for the Society of Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS). While with FLEA , Mr. Poston participated in the premiers of several works by contemporary composers Juraj Kojs, Paula Matthusen, and Daniel Lepervanche. Furthermore, he participated in two critically acclaimed performances of David Tudor's Rainforest IV in which he and the ensemble created musical instruments inspired by objects displayed at The Wolfsonian Museum.
In addition to acoustic music, Mr. Poston actively studied additional techniques in electro-acoustic music composition with Paula Matthusen. He finished his Master's degree at Florida International University in 2011 and was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Research Award for his thesis On the Creation of Matter.
Mr. Poston has been performed in United States and Europe. In 2011, his composition Three Considerations was a finalist in the Duosolo Young Composer's Composition Competition. Recently, his music has been featured in the Subtropics Festival, Cortona Sessions for New Music, and Florida Electro-Acoustic Student's Festival (FEASt).
