Born in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, studied philosophy and theology in Wuppertal and Marburg, and then church music (majoring in organ, piano and composition) in Heidelberg and Cologne.
From 1976 he worked as A-cantor in Bonn, where he also conducted the Bonn Youth Symphony Orchestra for many years. Concert tours have taken him beyond Europe to the USA, Australia and Israel, where he was also appointed guest cantor at the Jerusalem Erlöserkirche.
The series Opera in the Church, which he initiated, met with great response. Occasionally Wicke also made his mark as a composer; most recently with a cycle of orchestral songs, which was premiered in 2016 as part of the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Bonn Protestant Church.
