Albrecht Maurer was born in Aachen, grew up in Lohmar, played in the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Bonn in the late '70's, studied violin at the Music Conservatory of Cologne, and learned the piano at first auto-didactically, later with lessons. Led by an inner urge, he has been composing since the age of 17. As a composer he is largely self-taught; he also studied composition with Johannes Fritsch and Klarenz Barlow. Albrecht Maurer gained experience in New Music through intensive collaboration with several composers from school of Mauricio Kagel, among others, Maria de Alvear, Carola Bauckholt and Manos Tsangaris. Working in various ensembles, he worked on projects with keyboard instruments, audio synthesis programming, violin and voice. After finishing his studies he continued to gain experience with Theo Jörgensmann, Kent Carter and Karl Berger.
