From 1974 to 1983 at the Folkwang University in Essen, Danner studied Composition in the Master Class of Hans Werner Henze, and Electronic Composition with Hans Ulrich Humpert at the Conservatory of Cologne. He rounded off his studies with the heroes of 20th century composers by further studies with György Ligeti in Darmstadt, Olivier Messiaen in Paris and Luciano Berio in Siena as well as at the IRCAM-Institute (Centre Pompidou) in Paris. He has taught at, among other places, the University of Duisburg, the Universidad Rio Piedras in San Juan and Puerto Rico/USA, at the Sorbonne in Paris and at the Conservatories in Brussels and Geneva. In 1988, Danner was awarded the Rome Prize; in 1989/90 he was Composer-in-Residence at the State Opera House at Hamburg; and from 1990-1995, was Composer-in-Residence at the German Opera, Berlin. His works have been performed in numerous cities in Germany as well as in Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Italy, France, Spain, Sweden, in South America and the USA. Wilfried Maria Danner lives presently in Cologne.
