Peter was born in Munich. He studied composition with Büchtger and Bialas, musicology with Georgiades and Dahlhaus and he was also involved with free jazz, political cabaret and live electronics. He collaborated with Josef A. Riedl, and he was a member of the improvisation group Between along with Luc Ferrari and Carl Orff. He has composed appliedmusic for theatre, radio play and television play. He is also a self Performing Artist.
He has made lectures and concert tours throughout Europe, USA and Asia including four full-length music theatre works, orchestral performances at the Munich Musica Viva, the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Festival Weeks, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Donaueschingen Music Days. His first symphony Die Lichtung was performed in 1988 under Sergiu Celibidache.
He has numerous CD releases with WERGO and Celestial Harmonies, 1997-2012 Chair of Composition at the Hamburg Academy of Music and Theater, since 2016 Music Director of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. Since 2018 he is a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts.
Many commissions and prizes honoured his work.
