He was born in 1945 into the English speaking minority of Calcutta.
1951-65 Piano studies. 1957 first compositions.
1961-65 scientific studies at the University of Calcutta.
1965-68 concert pianist, 1967-68 also conductor.
1968-73 studies of composition and electronic music at the Musikhochschule Cologne.
1971-72 Sonology studies at the University of Utrecht.
Since 1971 composition with computers.
Computer music lecturer 1982-94: Darmstadt Holiday Courses, 1984-2006: Academy of Music Cologne.
1982 initiator, 1986 co-founder GIMIK: Initiative Musik und Informatik Köln.
1988 Music Director, XIV International Computer Music Conference in Cologne.
1990 Visiting professor at the Folkwang-Hochschule Essen.
1990-94 Artistic Director, Institute for Sonology in The Hague, 1994-2006 Professor of Composition and Sonology ibid.
2005-06 Visiting professor at the ESMAE Porto.
2006-19 Professor and Head of the Composition Department at the Music Department of the University of California in Santa Barbara.
Since 2018 visiting professor at the ESMUC Barcelona.
He, now, lives in Barcelona.
