Khadija Zeylanova was born in Azerbaijan. Since early childhood, she dealt with music and undertook her first attempts at composition at the age of 11. In 1994 she received her diploma in music theory at the Sumgayit Music College (Azerbaijan). Afterwards she studied composition and music theory / musicology at the Music Academy in Baku under Prof. Khayyam Mirzezadeh (Bachelor: 1998, Master: 2000). This was followed by composition studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold under Prof. Martin Christoph Redel (2005-2006). From 2006 to 2012, she completed her doctoral studies in musicology at the University of Paderborn under Prof. Dr. med. Werner Keil. The topic of her doctoral thesis was: Azerbaijani music culture in the 20th century and its reception of Western music.
In 1999 she became a member of the Azerbaijan Composers Union. Between 1995 and 2005 she taught music theory, composition, ear training, harmony and counterpoint at the Sumgayit Music College in Azerbaijan. From 2000 to 2005, she taught music theory, harmonics, ear training and music history in Baku, Azerbaijan, at the State University of Arts and Culture. Since 2013 she teaches music at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold / University of Paderborn and teaches at the Musik- und Kunstschule Bielefeld.
