Johannes X. Schachtner After studying composition and orchestral conducting in Munich and scholarships in Bamberg and Paris, Schachtner worked as a freelance conductor and composer.
He has conducted orchestras such as the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the Bad Reichenhall Philharmonic and the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic as well as numerous ensembles in the field of new music. Music theater productions have taken him to the Vorarlberger Landestheater and the Munich Biennale, among others. He is musical director of the Youth Ensemble for New Music, Bavaria (JU[MB]LE) as well as of the collegium:bratananium and since 2019 of the children's orchestra Kindersinfoniker initiated by Julia Fischer.
His extensive compositional output is performed by internationally renowned soloists such as Maximilian Hornung, Matthias Höfs, Lena Neudauer, Julius Berger or the conductor Ulf Schirmer and he has received numerous commissions, for example from the Munich Biennale or the Leopold Mozart Competition. In autumn 2018 a full-length work to Herman Melville's Bartleby was performed at the Niedersächsische Musiktage, and in 2019 a double concerto will be premiered at the Kronberg Academy Festival together with the Kremerata Baltica.
For his work, which is regularly heard in portrait concerts, Johannes X. Schachtner has received many awards at competitions. In July 2019 his third portrait CD (Sammelsurium - Musik für Blech und Tasten) will be released, a co-production with BR.
Among others he received the Music Promotion Prize of the City of Munich in 2013 and the Bavarian Art Promotion Prize in 2014. He is also a regular curator of concerts and projects in the field of contemporary music.
