Hans-Michael Rummler

Home / Composers / Hans-Michael Rummler

Hans-Michael Rummler was born in Herren-berg/Böblingen. He studied piano, clarinet and composition in Cologne (conservatory and university) and then switched to musicology, philosophy and sociology from Cologne via Berlin and Bielefeld to Bremen. After his diploma and doctorate, he taught aesthetics and cultural studies at the University of Hanover and the Hochschule für Künste Bremen. After some years, while being musically in an orientation phase, in 2000 he again took up composition studies with the American composer John Van Buren (Augsburg, Stuttgart). He lives and works as a freelance composer in the district of Günzburg.
His compositions (especially for piano and choir) are a journey into the unknown, where there is always something new to discover, in silence, in the abstinence from rules. For him, composing is creative, creative arguing beyond language, thinking beyond musical material and forms, beyond the appropriateness and meaningfulness of musical and extra-musical contents - a reflexive practice on the edge of musical logic, knowing about his own inadequacy. In his learning, undogmatic compositional style, he tries in each work to create a new musical balance between past and present challenges.
