Hakan Ulus is a German-Turkish composer. Studied composition with Ernst Helmuth Flammer, Adriana Hölszky, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf and Tristan Murail at the Mozarteum University Salzburg (BA 2013, MA 2015) and the HMT Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Leipzig. As a scholarship holder of the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA), he also completed a master's degree in contemporary music - composition (M.Mus. 2016) at the HfMDK Frankfurt. Additionally musicological studies at the Mozarteum University.
Participation in master classes with Brian Ferneyhough, Chaya Czernowin, Dieter Schnebel, Steven Kazuo Takasugi, Ming Tsao, Peter Ablinger, Dieter Mack and Pierluigi Billone, as well as participation in the Next Generation program of the Donaueschinger Musiktage, the International Darmstadt Summer Courses 2012, 2016, Harvard Summer Composition Institute Residency 2014 and the ManiFeste Academy IRCAM 2017. He has received various grants (including Berlin grant from AdK Berlin, Artist in Residence Istanbul 2017 from Kunststiftung NRW, International Ensemble Modern Academy 2015/16, Harvard Composition Institute Residency 2014, DRK International Composers Residency Singapore 2015, I-Park Foundation Residency 2015, Turkish Cultural Foundation 2014, work grant Salzburg 2014, EMAS 2014), prizes and composition commissions.
His works are performed by renowned interpreters such as Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble SurPlus, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Aventure, Talea Ensemble, IEMA Ensemble and Ensemble mise-en at prominent festivals of new music (Salzburg Biennale, Klangspuren Schwaz, KlangNetz Dresden, ManiFeste Academy, ZKM Karlsruhe, Beethovenfest Bonn, Ensemblia Festival, KunstKulturKirche Frankfurt, Aventure concert series Freiburg) performed in various cities at home and abroad: Frankfurt, Freiburg, Berlin, Munich, Leipzig, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Bonn, Karlsruhe, Mönchengladbach, Melbourne, Paris, Schwaz , Salzburg, Vienna, Singapore, Boston, East Haddam, New York and others.
Ulus' music has been broadcast several times on Austrian and German radio. Musicological publications are available from Wolke Verlag, Musik & Ästhetik and MusikTexte. He gave lectures on his music and musicological topics at Harvard University, Salzburg Festival, International Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg, Cologne Philharmonic, GEMA Berlin, Society for Ekmelic Music, Goethe University Frankfurt, HMT Leipzig, Meetingpoint Music Messiaen.
