Georg Kröll was born in Linz am Rhein, Germany.
He studied piano with Else Schmitz-Gohr and composition with Frank Martin and Bernd Alois Zimmermann at the Music Conservatory in Cologne.
Between 1960 and 1964 he was a regular participant at the International Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt (D) and the Gaudeamus Music Week in Bilthoven (NL). This is also the time he began his career as a New Music pianist, chamber musician and as Lied-accompanist.
In 1969/70 he was awarded an artist residency at the Villa Massimo in Rome.
Kröll has been living in Cologne since 1970, where he was a member of the composer collective Gruppe 8 between 1969 and 1972.
He taught composition and music theory until 1997 at the Rheinische Music School of the City of Cologne.
