Born in Bochum, he founded his first own ensemble in 1974, the GEORG GRAEWE QUINTETT and and subsequently directed a number of internationally cast ensembles - from a trio to a chamber orchestra - among them the GrubenKlangOrchester (1982-93), the trio GRAEWE · REIJSEGER · HEMINGWAY (since 1989) which is perhaps the most prominent.
Graewe has worked with many of today's leading musicians - including Anthony Braxton, Evan Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Phil Minton, Barre Phillips, John Butcher, Paul Lovens - much of it is on over 30 recordings under his own name, as well as further guest recordings have been documented.
Graewe's compositional work includes chamber music, orchestral pieces, as well as three chamber operas. Concerts, performances and radio productions in the US, Canada, Europe and Russia.
