was born in Brusque, Santa Catarina State, Brazil.
Started violin at 7 with his father and studied afterwords with Edith Reis in Rio de Janeiro and William Nowinsky in New York. Studied composition with H.J. Koellreutter and Ernst Krenek in Brazil, Aaron Copland and Peter Mennin in U.S.A, and Lennox Berkeley in London.
His catalogue includes music for solo instruments, chamber music and works for choir and for orchestra, outside of many scores for the theater and films.
His esthetical evolution goes from a first period with experimental techniques, following a neo-classical period with Brazilian thematic materials and a more recent post-modern fase, in which he uses both tonal and non tonal elements, from a major triad to a cluster, mixed with elements of Brazilian popular music.
He received many national and international prizes and directed many musical institutions, private and oficials. He organized many Festivals of Brazilian Contemporary Music in the last 50 years.
His scores are available at the Bank of Scores of the Brazilian Acadeny of Music, e-mail bancodepartituras@abmusica. org.br
