Michael was born in Chicago but has lived most of his life in London. He graduated with a music degree from the University of Southampton in 1980 and soon after began working as an arranger, midi programmer and session keyboard player for EMI Publishing.
His composing activities have included music for the stage, television and radio, ranging in style from jazz and rock to contemporary classical and sound design.
About his ‘classical’ writing, Michael says, “Composing for the concert hall is a different discipline from composing for media. The composer has complete freedom to choose and work his material as he wants. Over the years, I haven’t devoted as much time as I’d like to classical composition but I now have several works in the pipeline. I don’t feel I have a particular style or system, I see each piece as its own entity whatever idiom or ‘language’ it employs."
